Medicine
When children are taking medicine prescribed by a doctor, it is necessary to fill in a medical form that allows school staff to administer that medicine. Medicine is stored safely in the school office and children are encouraged to take their own medicine under adult supervision. A member of staff logs all medicine taken in school. Asthmatic children can keep their medicine with them for emergency use. An asthma policy exists in school to guide teachers in meeting the needs of asthmatics. Please note that we are not allowed to administer medicines unless they have been prescribed by a doctor.
School nurse
Our school nurse is Jane Marshall. She can be contacted either through school or at Totnes hospital on 01803 862622. The school nurse is available to see each child with their parent(s) the term after their 5th birthday for School Entry Health Interviews and Screening. She is also available for all children in the school and is happy to answer questions and to offer advice on health and other issues which may affect your child's life at home or at school. These may include allergies, asthma, enuresis (bed-wetting) or behavioural problems. If appropriate she is able to refer to another agency, such as the Community Paediatrician or Speech Therapist.
Accident and illness
A qualified first aider in school deals with minor accidents. Parents are informed both by telephone and letter of any more serious accident their child may have had. It is essential that parents give the school up-to-date emergency contact numbers. Where possible, children should know their emergency contact number. In the event of a child needing hospital treatment, parents are informed immediately. If a parent is unable to arrange for the child to be taken to hospital, an ambulance will be called, and the child accompanied by a known member of staff - we are unable to transport children to hospital in staff vehicles.
If a child is ill in school, parents will be informed so that the child can be taken home. If your child is unwell in the morning please don't sent them to school. We do not have the facilities or personnel to care for them.
