Dear Parents,

RNLI Week – 21st to 25th January 2008

As I mentioned in my last letter, our school has formed an exciting link with the new RNLI station in Dartmouth. As part of this link, we are planning an fantastic RNLI themed week, starting next Monday. During the week, the learning for all children in the school will be based on the RNLI, lifeboats and life-saving  – we will be working hard to develop children’s problem solving skills through this work. There will also be various events during the week.

All children will have the opportunity to visit the new lifeboat station in Dartmouth, to see the boat and equipment, and to meet a member of the crew. This will happen on either Monday 21st January or Wednesday 23rd January. There is no cost for this visit and children will be transported to and from the station in the Community College minibus. The arrangements for children in the Nursery are slightly different – you will receive a separate letter from Miss Heard with full details.

The RNLI have requested permission to photograph children for possible publicity use – please let me know if you do not want this to happen. If you do not allow the school to use photographs of your child, I will ensure that they are not photographed during this visit. We will also be involved in a competition, with other local schools, to name the new lifeboat when it arrives in Dartmouth.

On Friday 25th January, we will be taking part in the RNLI’s SOS fund-raising day. On that day, children will be able to wear non-school uniform, in exchange for a donation of £1.00. We are also asking as many children as possible to decorate a pair of wellington boots (or other shoes if they don’t have wellies) and wear them to school that day. There will be prizes for the most imaginatively decorated wellies in each Key Stage.

In addition, during the week, I have challenged each class to come up with a way of raising money for the RNLI on Friday afternoon. Each class will be lent £10 to buy materials, or whatever they need for their idea, and there will be a prize for the most imaginative fund-raising plan and for the class that raise the most money. We will be using the class ideas to raise money on Friday, so please, if possible, send your child to school with some change, so they are able to take part fully.

The RNLI is a registered charity, whose volunteer lifeboat crews and lifeguards put their own lives on the line to save others. They provide a 24-hour search and rescue service around the UK

PTO

and Republic of Ireland and safeguard UK beaches. The RNLI relies entirely on voluntary

contributions for its income. Taking part in RNLI SOS day is our way of raising money to help these brave volunteers continue their lifesaving work, so that we can all enjoy our coasts, beaches

and waterways in greater safety.

We hope you are happy for your child to participate and would be grateful if you could ensure they bring their donation to school on Friday 25 January.

Best wishes,

Rik Meek
