A Victory! Youth Speaks Competition

What a night Friday 22nd January 2010 turned out to be!

The annual Dartmouth heat of the Rotary Club’s Youth Speaks Competition took place on Friday 22nd January at the Dart Centre.  We entered two teams for the first time this year.

All four teams that took place spoke very well, presenting some interesting subjects.  The teams from St John the Baptist School gave two very entertaining talks about the Elgin Marbles and the conditions that circus elephants have to endure..

Ryan, Matthew and Liam gave a very informative and perhaps controversial talk about the plight of the tiger entitled ‘Will My Grandchildren Know What A Tiger Looks Light?’  They gave a creditable performance.  They spoke with confidence about how farming tigers might save them from extinction.

However the night belonged to Georgia, Mia and Emily who won the competition with their talk entitled ‘Do The Shops Of Dartmouth Serve The Young People Of The Town?’  Georgia took the role of chair and conducted the procedings in a friendly yet business like manner, Mia, despite battling with a cough, gave an accomplished talk and was able to answer her question effectively.  Finally Emiliy gave an animated vote of thanks.

All three girls (and Mrs Mules) were stunned when they were announced as the winners as the standard of the other teams was very high!  They were awarded a trophy and book vouchers along with their certificates.

The girls now go on to represent Dartmouth in the next round of the competition at Blundells School at the end of February.  We wish them all the best of luck.
